SOS/Lighthouse

The purpose of South Oakland Shelter (SOS) is to help homeless individuals with their immediate needs while they actively work toward more permanent solutions to their homelessness. SOS is a rotating emergency shelter that resides in area host churches. Each church takes a one week turn in the rotation. SOS is now under the umbrella of Lighthouse.

Every May our parish co-hosts SOS for one week. We alternate with Rochester Church of Christ providing housing at the church, three meals a day and transportation to and from our facility for a group of 25-30 men, women and children. It takes a huge commitment and tremendous coordination to make this short, intense week a success. It takes close to 100 people and over $3,000 for the church to help our guests. There are a multitude of ways to be involved in this tremendous effort.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, we have gone from serving approximately 10,000 individuals each year, to over 5,000 individuals each week just through our emergency food distribution program. This year, we hope to be able to provide a full Thanksgiving meal to 2,000 deserving families, but we need your help!

There are many way to get involved with this project: Host a food drive, host a virtual food drive, volunteer and/or donate.

We are looking forward to providing a wonderful Thanksgiving for deserving families in our community. We could not make this happen without your help!
