Funerals

"I am the resurrection “I am the resurrection and the life, he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall not die.”     —John 11:25

Preparing for and dealing with the loss of a loved one involves a host of decisions and details. We highly recommend making plans well in advance and communicating your wishes to your loved ones and the church. The Episcopal Church Foundation has prepared a very useful guide that can help you figure out what you need to do. Click the link to access it.

When death is near, we encourage you to contact the clergy to arrange a visit for prayers and anointing.

Please also contact the clergy to make plans for the funeral or memorial service. You can call the church at (248) 651-6188 or email ericw@stpfeeds.org.

It is preferred to have the service at the church when possible. The clergy can also lead a simple service at the funeral home. You can look at a sample of that service below.

We have provided suggested hymns to assist in your planning process.

Suggested readings are found at: https://www.lectionarypage.net/YearABC/SpecServ/Burial.html

Some questions you will need to consider when planning your service at the church:

  1. Will the ashes or casket be present for the service?
  2. Will you be providing altar flowers? The church normally uses Viviano's florist in Rochester.
  3. Will the service include Holy Communion?
  4. Roughly how many people will you expect?
  5. Will a friend or family member give a eulogy (we prefer one or two at most)?
  6. Will there be special music or a soloist in addition to the church organist?
