Building a Foundation for the Future
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. (Matthew 7:24)
This Fall we are engaging in a process to discern whether we should undertake a capital campaign. I want to share with you why I am excited about this effort and strongly support moving forward with this endeavor. Since I arrived at St. Philip’s we have been catching up on many years of deferred maintenance. Thanks to your generosity and the leadership and vision of our Vestry, Junior Wardens, and Property Committee, we have made amazing progress over the past nine years. But keeping up with the projects sometimes can feel like a frustrating game of “Whack-a-Mole.”
My vision has been and remains of a church where we have identified and addressed all of the major needs of our buildings and grounds, paid back our savings for projects like the beautiful new parking lot, finally paid off our outstanding mortgage and loans, AND are building up an endowment to provide a stable source of income to meet our property needs long into the future. A church where we don’t have to come back to you year after year for capital gifts on top of your pledge. A church where all of our pledges and annual gifts can go to the ministries we care about—our mission of feeding the heart, soul, mind and body. A church where we have the resources to think higher, dream bigger, and serve wider in the name of Jesus.
So join me, won’t you, on this journey of discernment. Together let’s work to build on the foundation that has been laid by generations of faithful Philippians. And let’s do our part to continue to build on the rock that is Jesus Christ and ensure the stability and strength of this church for many years to come.
Faithfully,
Eric M. Williams, Rector
