                                               “Remembering to Give Thanks”

“May you be prepared to endure everything with patience,

while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you

to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light.”  Colossians 1:11-12

“To be grateful is to recognize the love of God in everything he has given us — and he has given us everything.  Every breath we draw is a gift of his love, every moment of existence is a grace.  Gratitude, therefore, takes nothing for granted, is never unresponsive, is constantly awakening to new wonder and praise of the goodness of God.  For the grateful person knows that God is good, not by hearsay but by experience.  And that is what makes all the difference.”  Thomas Merton

The list of Scripture passages and prayers below are offered as a way to grace your Thanksgiving table.  May you find joy in this year’s Thanksgiving feast.  Fr. John

Scripture Passages for Thanksgiving

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;

     his love endures forever.

                                   1 Chronicles 16:34

This is the day that the LORD has made;

     let us rejoice and be glad in it.

                                          Psalm 118:24

Do not be anxious about anything, but in

     every situation, by prayer and petition,

     with thanksgiving, present your

     request to God.     Philippians 4:6

Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one

     another with psalms, hymns, and

     songs from the Spirit. Sing and make

     music from your heart to the Lord,

     always giving thanks to God, the

     Father for everything, in the name of

     our Lord Jesus Christ.

                                     Ephesians 5:18b-20

Rejoice always, pray continually, give

     thanks, in all circumstances; for this is

     God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

                                 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Just as you received Christ Jesus as

     Lord, continue to live your lives in him,

     rooted and built up in him,

     strengthened in the faith as you were

     taught, and overflowing with

     thankfulness.  Colossians 2:6-7

Prayers for Thanksgiving Observance

Dear God,

Help us always to Count our blessings             instead of our crosses;
Count our gains instead of our losses.
Count our joys instead of our woes;
Count our friends instead of our foes.
Count our smiles instead of our tears;
Count our courage instead of our fears.
Count our full years instead of our lean;
Count our kind deeds instead of our
means.
Count our health instead of our wealth;
And especially, count on You instead of
 ourself.

We ask this in the name of Jesus.  Amen

Merciful Creator,

This Thanksgiving we give you thanks in a time of difficulty and division in our     country and around the world.

We are thankful that your kingdom “Cannot be shaken,” and that above all the turmoil caused by evil and human sin, you are sovereign.

We give thanks in the knowledge and peace that you reign, that your Word does not come back to you empty.

Though the world shakes, you provide for our needs in all seasons.  For all this, we are grateful.

In the name of Jesus Christ.  Amen

Healer of our Hearts,

Let us remember that we are always in           the holy presence of God.
We asked for strength, and you gave us
difficulties to make us strong.
We asked for wisdom, and you gave us
problems to solve.
We asked for prosperity, and you gave us
purpose and brains to use.
We asked for courage, and you gave us
fears to overcome.
We asked for patience, and you gave us
situations where we were forced to wait.
We asked for love, and you gave us
troubled people to help.
We asked for justice, and you called us to
 be just and to lead with integrity.
Lord, we have received nothing that we
asked for or wanted.
And yet, we received everything that we
needed.
For this, we give You thanks.  Amen

Loving God,

For daily bread and all who work to bring      the harvest home, we bring You our     thanks.
Forgive our ingratitude for you have given
much, and yet, we waste so much of           what you have given.
For those whose harvest is poor,
   whose crops have withered,
   water tainted, children starve,
Help those who bring relief and bestow
on us an unaccustomed generosity,
   that all might share from your garden
   and all might sing your praise.
Creator God, provider of all,
   we bring our thanks today.  Amen

Let the vineyards be fruitful, Lord,
    And fill to the brim our cup of blessing.
Gather a harvest from the seeds that were sown,
   That we may be fed with the bread of life.
Gather the hopes and dreams of all;
    Unite them with the prayers we offer now.
Grace our table with Your presence, and give us
    A foretaste of the feast to come.       John W. Arthur
